I’m Marcelle Dominique Versteeg — also known as Cella Marcy — an illustrator, visual artist and designer based in Cape Town, South Africa. After graduating from North-West University in Potchefstroom with a BA in Graphic Design (majoring in Illustration and Multimedia Design), I spent six years working and travelling across Southeast Asia. I began as an EFL teacher before returning to my vocation as an illustrator, graphic designer and muralist.
During this time I completed a series of mural commissions in Sri Lanka and developed a collection of prints that are still sold at Collective Memory in Hanoi, Vietnam. My work in animation illustration began in 2020 at the all-female creative production studio We Are Batch and continued from 2022–2025 at the award-winning animation studio Made by Radio. I currently freelance from my home office in Simon’s Town, Cape Town.
My art practice is rooted in world-making, shaped by the legacies of consumption, commerce, culture, language and mythology. My illustration work reflects my varied experiences and a deep love for visual storytelling across mediums. I have over 10 years’ experience creating thoughtful, well-crafted visual work across brand, social and campaign projects — from concept through to final artwork.
My practice combines strong typography and layout with distinctive illustration to help brands communicate clearly while maintaining personality. I work across digital, social, print and rollout campaigns, and can support existing concepts or help shape a visual direction from the ground up.
